if you are really interested read up on general relativity but to sum it up.
the faster you go the slower time goes. This literally means if you are moving really fast the particles that make up your body will experience time slower then someone who is not moving. This really only affects things that are moving really fast (close to the speed of light). Now this might not exactly answer your question on the definition of time but it is an important premise on how we humans define it and how we know about its nature.
so we basically define time by the rate of which certain substances experience radio active decay (atomic clocks). All matter goes through radio active decay but some elements (plutonium urainium) decay alot faster. decay is just a particle like uranium losing a proton (or a few) and becoming lead. This radio active decay happens at a very constant rate (half life) based on probability. The reason we know time is a dimension based on your velocity is that if you speed up a mass of uranium or plutonium it will decay slower. it will experience time slower then something traveling at less velocity.
so basically time is a dimension which you can move through only forward and it is real. It is not just something made up by people to organize there days!

The definition of time is that it is a human concept which allows us to track rates of change we observe in our wold. It isn't really calculated, it is measured. Clocks measure time, stopwatches measure time, the sun measures time, even the human body is evoled to have a sense of time measurement.
If time is to be calculated, it is rearranged for, algebraically, in formulas which involve measurement fo time.
Time can either refer to the duration of an event, for instance "I spent two hours on homework", or time can refer to the "position in time" at which an event begins, for instance, 10:09 am.

Time is the only known dimension of spacetime which is not spatial. If you have a definition of distance that satisfies you, then I can probably give you a satisfactory definition of time. Similarly, if you can tell me what you would mean by calculating distance, then I can probably tell you how time is calculated.
