I am learning physics and i still do not understand what that means.

"The magnitude of the acceleration is proportional to the magnitude of the net force and INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL to the object's mass."

What does 'inversely proportional' mean in this sentence?

It means that if you change the mass by some factor then the acceleration changes by the reciprocal of that same factor. For instance if you doubled the mass the acceleration would be cut in half. If you had ten times as much mass you'd have one tenth the acceleration, and so on.

Direct proportion is the like exchange rate of money, £1 =$2, so £5 = 5 x $2 =$10. If 1 man in on a trip in a car pays £40 on petrol then 4 men sharing a car won't pay 4 x £40 for the trip = £160! The cost will be divided by 4, not multiplied by 4. The exchange rate is directly proportional, you won't end up with less £'s than you exchanged. The petrol man will pay less, the more people share his journey. This is inverserly proportional.

It means the higher the magnitude of acceleration, the lower the object's mass.

Inversely proportional means as one increases, the other decreases.

Proportional relationship means the opposite.

The other answers are correct; if x is inversely proportional to y, then as x increases, y decreases. This can be represented mathematically as x ∝ 1/y

basically proportional means that as one variable increases, so does the other.

Inversley proportional simply means that as one variable (in this case mass) goes up, the other variable (acceleration) decreases.

Hope that helps!

1. opposite: opposite in size, degree, or rate of development

2. mathematics changing oppositely by same factor: involving a mathematical relationship in which an increase in one variable by a given factor brings about a decrease by the same factor in another
