A car travelling at 60km/h overtakes another car travelling at 42km/h. Assuming each car to be 5m long, find the time taken during the overtake and the total road distance used for the overtake?

STEPS REQUIRED PLZ

60-42 = 18km/h = 5m/s

s = ut+1/2 at^2 with a = 0

s = 10m (5m to catch up with other car, 5m to clear it)

10 = 5*t => t = 2s

to find road distance

s = ut

u = 60km/h = 16.7m/s

s = 16.7 *2 = 33.3m

Time to overtake is the period between the front of the 60km/h reaching the end of the other car and its end reaching front of other cart.Thus the 60km/h cart travels 5m more than the other car in the same time.

60km/h=100/6m/s

42km/h=70/6m/s

if the time required is t,

t x(100/6-70/6)=5

so, t=1sec

total road dstance used is distance travelled by the 42km/h car during overtake.

i.e 70/6m=11.67m

Speed of car A= 60 km/h = 16.6666667 m/s

Speed of car B= 42 km/h = 11.6666667 m/s

Difference in speed A-B= 5 m/s

Total distance travel to Overtake= 5+5= 10m

Total time taken to over take = 10/5 = 2 sec

Road Distance travelled by Car A during overtake= 33.333 m

Road Distance travelled by Car B during overtake= 23.333 m

first car travels at 60kmph i.e., 50/3 metres per second.

second car travels at 42kmph i.e., 35/3 meters per second.

length of the two cars is 5m(given)

the relative speed of the two cars travelling in the same direction is

(50/3)-(35/3)=(15/3)

which equals 5meters per second

now, relative distance travelled by the two cars is

(5+5)=10m

since the length of each car is 5m(given).

therefore the time of meeting of the two cars is (10/5)

i.e., relative distance divided by relative speed of the cars.

so the car wil overtake the other car in 2 seconds

then the distance travelled for overtaking is (2*5)=10m

(the product of relative time and relative speed).

solution:

time to overtaket:2s

distance for overtaking: 10m
