yes - assuming there are no nearby magnetic fields that are stronger than the earth's, or no strongly magnetic materials (such as metal) very close to the compass

Yes, it points to the MAGNETIC north pole, but not the geographic north pole. There is a degree of difference between them. I learned at one point how to find the degrees, but I forgot how. Sorry.
