A fathom is approximately 6 ft in length. Take the distance from Earth to the Moon to be 285,000 miles, and use the given approximation to find the distance in fathoms.

Convert from miles to feet. Then convert from feet to fathoms. 2.68 x 10^9 mi * (5280 ft/mi) = equivalent feet the above equivalent feet * (1 fathom/6 ft) = equivalent fathoms Or you can do it in one line: 2.68 x 10^9 mi * (5280 ft/mi) * (1 fathom/6 ft) = equivalent fathoms Notice in the conversion factors used, the fractions both equal 1.000000 5280 feet = 1 mile, so dividing one by the other yields one. And you can multiply anything by one and it doesn't change the value. It changes the units, and the digits, but not the value.

Missy- this is a simple division question. If you can't solve this now and cheat by asking people on the Internet, you'll be really lost when you're given something harder to do later on the test.

Have you even tried to solve the question?
