This means the total force after all vector addition. If it is zero then acceleration can't be anything but zero.



Objects tend to keep their current velocities unless they are acted on by a force.

Jordan is close except he missed the idea of net force that there might be another applied force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. In this case the net force is zero.

"Changing Speed/Velocity" is most likely the answer in my opinion. Although "Applied Force" seems applicable considering it is a physics class and an object will not accelerate (or decelerate) without some kind of applied force.
