When a car suddenly stops, you still carry on moving (Newton's first law). When a person travels forward they have momentum, and hitting the dashboard, the momentum is lost in an extremely short amount of time because of the force exerted on the person by the dashboard. When airbag is used, momentum is lost over a larger amount of time.

The maximum number of deaths in head-on collisions in cars occur due to the head of the driver hitting the steering wheel (which is positioned directly in front of the drivers face in cars).
What airbags do is to inflate momentarily so that the momentum of the driver's upper body is cushioned at the moment of impact so that he/she does not hit the steering wheel with a great degree of force.
The airbag itself is made of a porous material so that the gas in it leaks out in a few seconds once the aim of cushioning is achieved , thus collapsing the bag and releasing the driver to move freely again

In my opinion, they aren't. It's cause all those fancy airbag, motion sensors and upgraded AI that people get careless in the first place...
Only when Toyota or BMW has place steel spikes instead of airbags, fitted a bomb in the baby seat designed to blow up at a crash and used a paper frame will deaths reduce.

In believe something in physics is defined by acceleration x time. (inertia or momentum or whatever. I cant remember). the acceleration (actually a deceleration) when you hit a brick wall will stay the same, but the airbag will increase the amount of time, and lessen the impact.

air is compressible and u know when an accident occurs ,an impulse generates and u know impulse is inversely proportional to time.so to decrease the impact of our head striking on car handle air bags comes up and decreases the time. so impact decreases.u can take reference of catching of ball by a player
