i was wondered how can you survive an elevator fall? like a freefall? i heard that jumping doesn't help and laying flat on the ground can give you a little more chance but it is still deadly. If you hang on to the elevator handle bar on the side, and hang out really tight, is it possible that you can avoid the ground impact? also, what happens to the ground on the elevator once it hits the ground? does it like turn into metal shreds? or what? thanks

In the forties an airplane accidentally crashed into the Empire State Building in NYC. It severed the cables of an occupied elevator that fell to ground floor from the 79th floor. The roof was crushed by the cables but the occupants survived. One secretary was gutsy enough to announce that the Navy was here when rescued by a sailor. Perhaps survival was dumb luck. Modern elevators may have devices that prevent free fall. At the bottom there may be a huge spring to absorb energy. Lying flat would spread out a body spreading the force of impact over a greater area (less pounds per square inch) and perhaps avoid compression of the spine. Flexing knees standing might help absorb any shock compared to locked knees.

If it's in free fall the affect will be the same as jumping out a window from the same height. So it depends on the height really, might get away with just a few broken limbs.

The lift would probably buckle on impact and become completely jammed at the bottom of the shaft. Floor might get pushed inwards a bit if there's any machinery under it, it's hard to speculate.

Why did you ask such a question on New Year's Day?

Well, I think that you would be ok in the event of an elevator fall, because each elevator goes with a safety device, which can stops the elevator right away any time it runs out of control.

However, if that safety device doesn't work well, the result would be tragic.

Happy New Year!

That purely happens interior the flicks. there's a cam brake that could desire to offer up you interior some feet if there became a failure. you may get trapped for a on a similar time as yet you will not fall to the backside.

What if you jump just before it hits the ground? Wouldn't that exempt you from the impact?
